Kanohi kitea – Te Wao Nui a Tāne

Aio ki te ao rangi. Aroha ki te ao rangi. Koa, koa, koa ki te ao rangi. Pono ki te ao rangi. Aio ki te ao rangi. Heio anō, kia pono te mahi, mā te puāwai kā mōhiotia te putiputi. No reira, tēnā koutou katoa.

My brain is as busy as a Te Wao Nui a Tāne; teaming with life.

Kanohi kitea. Whakapeke. Unseen. Seen.

Our relationship with Papatūānuku and Ranginui is vast beyond time and space. It is simple and it is complex. This is the foundation of my relationship with te ao hurihuri, and particularly with te taiao.

Over the last 20 years te taiao has been guiding me so generously. I am humbled to share some of my journey within.

When I look at now, I am grateful for the teachers I’ve had in my life. Charmaine Bailie, Restorative Ecologist, and a true tree whisperer – is one that comes to mind. She has generously shared mātauranga with me; with many. I now know I have a fascination of soil. Esoterically because of the connection to Papatūānuku and literally because with healthy soil we have healthy life.

When I look at times gone by, I think of my tuakana, Rose Beauchamp, dear friend, dear sister. Her love of the Marlborough Sounds, my turangawaewae, and the space of Whanganui-a-tara. I am blessed. To be connected by whakapapa, and my wanderings all at once. I have sat quietly in her gardens, and always felt nourished by the ambling ngahere spaces that sit in front of me, behind me, before me.

When I look to the future, I see courageous decisions will need to be made, and I thank the likes of Ian ‘Shappy’ Shapcott and the Kotahitanga mō te Taiao Alliance. For visions coincide and diverge, then weave back together to a pulse that is the same, to care for and connect into our world with compassion and integrity.

Let’s be nourished by and cherished in our relationship with Te Ao Hurihuri, with Te Taiao, with Papatūānuku and Ranginui. Te Wao Nui a Tāne.

Arohanui, nā
